Summary Of On Race And Time - 979 Words

Summary of â€Å"On Race and Time† The article summarized here is an explanation of the research conducted by Gordon Moskowitz, Irmak Olcaysoy Okten, and Cynthia Gooch. Their hypothesis was that when people try to appear that they aren’t biased, they experience a slowing of time that isn’t real when they are faced with situations involving others from a specific race. For example: A white man may experience that time has slowed when he is confronted with a situation in which he may seem biased toward a black man. There were two experiments, both of which were conducted at Lehigh University among students in an Introduction to Psychology class. Before the experiments, each participant was tested for high or low EMCP (external motivation to control prejudice). A person with high EMCP would report a need to be politically correct and seem unbiased in any situation. When they fail to do so or they appear to be biased or prejudiced, it causes a high amount of anxiety. IMCP (internal motivation to control prejudice) was measured at the same time. A person with high IMCP is usually concerned with being fair toward everyone, and when they’re faced with situations that could make them seem biased, it does not yield high anxiety; instead, they are more concerned with completing the task of being fair. The first experiment was conducted among 40 white students (24 women and 16 men) from an Introduction to Psychology class. In this experiment the participants were divided into high andShow MoreRelatedPlessy vs. Ferguson: A Case Study735 Words   |  3 PagesFerguson Background After the end of Reconstruction in 1877 Southern state legislatures enacted Jim Crow laws to legally segregate the races. How to Make Bismuth Crystals From Pepto-Bismol

Pepto-Bismol is a common antacid medicine that contains bismuth subsalicylate or pink bismuth, which has the empirical chemical formula  (Bi{C6H4(OH)CO2}3). The chemical is used as an antacid, anti-inflammatory, and bactericide, but in this project, it is used for science! Heres how to extract the bismuth metal from the product. Once you have it, one project you can try is growing your own bismuth crystals. Key Takeaways: Get Bismuth from Pepto-Bismol Tablets The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is bismuth subsalicylate. It is what gives Pepto-Bismol its pink color. There are two easy ways to obtain bismuth metal from Pepto-Bismol. The first is to burn off all the impurities using a blow torch and then melting and crystallizing the metal. The second method is to grind the tablets, dissolve them in muriatic (hydrochloric) acid, filter the liquid and precipitate the bismuth onto aluminum foil, and melt/crystallize the metal.Bismuth obtained via either method may be used to grow rainbow-colored bismuth crystals. Bismuth Extraction Materials There are a couple of different methods for isolating the bismuth metal. One way is to burn Pepto-Bismol into a metal oxide slag using a blow torch and then separate  the metal from the oxygen. However, theres an easier method that only requires household chemicals. Here are the materials to extract the bismuth, without fire. Pepto-Bismol Tablets: You need a lot. Each pill contains 262 mg bismuth subsalicylate, but only about an eighth of the mass is bismuth.Muriatic Acid - You can find this in a hardware store. Of course, if you have access to a chemistry lab, you can simply use hydrochloric acid.Aluminum FoilCoffee Filter or Filter PaperMortar and Pestle - If you dont have one, find a baggie and a rolling pin or hammer. Get the Bismuth Metal The first step is to crush and grind up the pills to form a powder. This increases the surface area so the next step, a chemical reaction, can proceed more efficiently. Take 150-200 pills and work in batches to grind them up. Aside from a mortar and pestle or bag with rolling pin or hammer, you could opt for a spice mill or coffee grinder. Your choice.Prepare a solution of dilute muriatic acid. Mix one part acid to six parts water. Add the acid to the water to prevent splashing. Note: muriatic acid is the strong acid HCl. It produces irritating fumes and can give you a chemical burn. Its a good plan to wear gloves and protective eyewear when you use it. Use a glass or plastic container, as the acid can attack metals (which is the point, after all.)Dissolve the ground-up tablets in the acid solution. You can stir it with a glass rod, plastic coffee stirrer, or wooden spoon.Remove the solids by filtering the solution through a coffee filter or filter paper. The pink liquid is what you want to save since it contains bismuth ions.Drop aluminum foil into the pink solution. A black solid will form, which is the bismuth. Allow time for the precipitate to sink to the bottom of the container.Filter the liquid through a cloth or paper towel to get the bismuth metal. The final step is to melt the metal. Bismuth has a low melting point, so you can melt it using a torch or in a higher-melting-point pan on a gas grill or even your stove. As the metal melts, youll see impurities pool apart. You can use a toothpick to remove them,Let your metal cool and admire your work. See the beautiful iridescent oxidation layer? You might even see crystals.  Good job! Pure bismuth forms hopper crystals and develops a rainbow oxidation layer. Little Hand Images / Getty Images   Safety and Cleanup This project requires adult supervision. Keep kids and pets away from the acid and heat. When youre done, dilute the chemicals with large volumes of water before disposing of them. If you want to make absolutely sure the acid is safe, you can add a bit of baking soda to the dilute acid to neutralize it. Pepto-Bismol Fun Facts Interesting adverse effects from ingesting Pepto-Bismol include black tongue and black stools. This occurs when sulfur in saliva and the intestines combines with the medicine to form the insoluble black salt, bismuth sulfide. Although dramatic-looking, the effect is temporary. The Worm in the Apple - 707 Words

The worm in the apple John Cheever is an American novelist, who gained his popularity as a short-story writer, for which he was awarded with Pulitzer prize for fiction. His work mostly deal with the duality oh human nature corroborated by cultural and psychological background. And his short story titled â€Å"The worm in the apple† is not an exclusion. The story unfolds very smoothly and evenly in spite of of the stirring and at the same time troubling subject of the matter. We get acquainted with the main characters – The Crutchman family â€Å"so very very happy and so temperate in all their habits and so pleased with everything that came their way†, due to the anaphoric repetition the author creates intensification, that states the problem –†¦show more content†¦For everybody the Crutchmans family apple is perfect, but inside, it is repellent. With the help of the atmosphere the author shows his own discourse about the problem – for him this familys way of life is ridiculous and absurd. He dwells upon it with tongue in cheek. It seems that characters are everywhere but not in their family just because they know and understand the despair and ruefulness of their little family theater. One more theme is relationships between parents and children. And one more time we see the worm: the mother who loves one child more than the other one, the mother who is jealous of her own daughter. And that of course cannot but contributes to Rachels and Toms future lives. Having condemned her own life, Helen does the same about their childrens ones. Speaking about the language, it contributes to the whole effect of the story. It opens with the sentence that sounds like a contradiction the Crutchmans are so happy that everyone necessarily believed that they are not. It is impossible not to notice the irony of Cheever – they are so so so very happy. This usage of numerous adjectives makes the story emotional and intense. Cheever creates the increase of tension by long sentences (he was at the communion rail, the fifty yard line). Many of them are 4-5 lines. But for slatting the problem the author uses simple short rhetorical questions. Summary Of Independence Threats Safeguards â€Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Summary Of Independence Threats Safeguards? Answer: Introducation The situation described in the in the question is that Katrina Ng, the senior accounts manager from Jenkins Ltd has fallen ill and as result needs replacing for the next four months for which a replacement has been asked from Thornleigh Accountants. The substitute accountant that Thornleigh Accountants provided is Ellen Davis and she finished the tenure in mid May. Now Thornleigh Accountants will conduct the audit of Jenkins Ltd and has an intention to use Ellen Davis as a part of the audit team. The specific domain of threat to independence under which this situation falls is, Self-review threat (Tepalagul and Lin 2015). This is because a member of Thornleigh Ltd namely Ellen Davis has recently been a part of Jenkins Ltd and audit team of Jenkins Ltd will also include Ellen Davis. In simpler terms, if one of the members of the audit and assurance team has been an employee of the client organization in the recent past and has been in a designation to influence the subject matter to b e evaluated then the situation falls under self-review threat. The situation given in this question is that the Audit Manager of Dargin Associates Accountants has received the accounting statements from Winmalee Ltd and has taken an optimistic approach to the valuation of development expenditure capitalized in intangible assets. It should also be noted that the senior staff bonuses is directly related to the firms profit performance and Winmalee has also provided copies of details taken from various accounting standards which are sympathetic to their approach to valuation of these assets. According to the conditions given in the situation, the domain of threat to independence under which this situation falls is familiarity or relationships threat (Blay and Geiger 2013). A familiarity or relationships threat is essentially a threat which is posed upon when the auditor has a close family or business relationship with the client. Now in this situation the audit manager may be lenient as Winmalee has used accounting standards which are sympathetic t o the approach of valuation as the bonus of senior staff depends directly on the total revenue. Therefore a relationships threat may arise on emotional terms (Carson et al., 2012). The situation given in the question is that the audit of a particular chocolate company has been asked to be done by the audit firm and it has also invited the audit firm to visit its second chocolate shop where defective chocolates are sold at a considerable discounted price. This situation will fall under self-interest threat as the auditing firm if refuses to comply with the unethical practices conducted by the chocolate company then it may refuse it to execute the audit of the financial statements of the company. Thus the auditing firm is concerned with losing a potent client (DeFond and Zhang 2014). The situation that is given in the question is that the Expert Travel Company currently wants to change the auditor as they want an auditor who is flexible in his approach for checking the financial standards of the company and as a result wants a final answer from the current auditor. This situation will again fall under self-interest threat as it can be observed that the auditor has financial interest in his client. In simpler terms the current auditor has the opportunity to accept the unethical practice proposed by the company and thus it falls under the category of self-interest threat (Koch, Weber and Wstemann 2012). he situation depicted in the question is that while carrying out the audit of Elmtree it comes into light that a senior member of the audit team, Elaine Ong is engaged to James Bing who is the senior accountant at Elmtree. This situation very rightly will fall under the category of familiarity threat as one of the members of the audit team has a family member or would be family member in the client organization. Elaine Ong being engaged to James Bing may widen the scope of improper auditing, thus it falls under familiarity threat (Dhaliwal et al., 2015). The situation mentioned in the question is that MCM Accountants will conduct an audit of Rangers Ltd. Now it is found out that one of the senior auditors on the audit Diane Polo plays on the same softball team as Elise Lift, the senior accountant and several other staff members from Rangers Ltd. This situation might fall under the category of familiarity threat, but no details have been provided in the question as to for how long Diane Polo is playing softball with Elise and other staff members of Rangers Ltd. If Elise and the other staff members are a mere acquaintance for Diane Polo then it will not fall under the category of any kind of threats but if a long association exists between Elise and the other staff members then it will definitely fall under the category of familiarity threat (Dhaliwal et al., 2015). An auditors report is one of the most important means by which the auditor makes a sincere effort in communicating the genuine information regarding the financial statements of the company to its stakeholders. With time unlike the structure of an auditors report, the accounting procedures of a firm have become more complex and global in nature. In present times auditors are taking on more risks in order to carry out error free auditing. The details of the information that is needed to be included in the audit report of the financial statements of a public company are audit matter that is critical, determinants for including each critical audit matter, exact clarification for each inclusion, a basic information regarding auditor tenure and also a standardized format of the audit report should be maintained by the auditor. An audit report should also very importantly highlight the loopholes in the financial statements in the company which is beneficial both for the company and its stakeholders (Gold, Gronewold and Pott 2012).
